About co-generation

cogeneration power system

Cogeneration is the term given to a system of power generation, which operates in parallel with the electricity supply or distribution network (grid).

Co-generation, or Combined Heat and Power (CHP), comprises the simultaneous production of two forms of energy — electricity and heat — from the single fuel source. This energy production process is characterised by extremely high levels of efficiency.

Heat recovered from the cogeneration unit is used to provide process heating in the form of either hot water or steam. This saves money by eliminating the need for additional investments in fuel to power boiler plants.

Cogeneration is gaining popularity — particularly as opportunities arise from the deregulation of the electricity and gas markets.

The benefits of cogeneration

Some key benefits of cogeneration include:

  • Single fuel source to supply both power and thermal site energy
  • Greatly increased fuel efficiency
  • Single cost reductions
  • Significant greenhouse gas reductions
  • Development costs payback within approximately 3 years
  • Generator can be located close to where the energy is required
  • Long-term energy savings depend on cost of alternative energy sources.

Energen Solution’s ThermoGen™ Systemcogeneration systems

Our ThermoGen™ product line comprises an extensive range of highly reliable, highly efficient, and ultra low emission distributed generation products.

ThermoGen™ systems are ideal for use wherever the efficient production of heat and/or power is paramount.

We provide design, manufacturing, factory testing and commissioning. Our services also include complete installation, training, maintenance and support for every ThermoGen™ system.

Our systems are exceeding the expectations of clients in a variety of settings, including:

  • Hospitals
  • Swimming pools
  • Leisure centres
  • Hotels, resorts and apartment buildings.

What distinguishes ThermoGen™ from other CHP systems?

  • Guaranteed fixed maintenance costs for life. Using “Power By The Hour” aerospace maintenance methods, first pioneered by Rolls Royce, ThermoGen™ also offers the only fixed cost maintenance program in Australia that truly guarantees your running costs for life.
  • Compact Package Design. Each ThermoGen™ system is specifically designed to offer an all-in-one solution to your energy production requirements — so there are no hidden costs or additional attachments to be purchased.
  • Efficiency Guaranteed For Life. ThermoGen™ systems are incredibly durable. The exceptional engine design and aerospace maintenance protocol of the ThermoGen™ engine ensures total efficiency, which never deteriorates.
  • thermogen systems
  • Power Cut Proof. ThermoGen™ can be designed to operate fully independent of the electricity grid. These systems are capable of starting up and running without the aid of electricity from the main supply.
  • Replace Your UPS. ThermoGen™ systems will maintain an uninterrupted supply to critical electrical loads during power outages, and remain synchronised with the mains when it returns. This means both electrical and heating energy security is fully assured. ThermoGen™ is also uniquely able to synchronise with the mains utility and a standby generator - independently or simultaneously.

Meeting commercial & industrial energy requirements at 85% efficiency

Power stations feeding the national grid are only about 35% efficient, wasting large amounts of heat and emitting approximately up to 850 kg of carbon dioxide for every MW/hr of electricity produced.

Further energy losses are incurred as power is transmitted across the country, making grid power only about 30% energy efficient.

In line with Energen Solutions’ commitment to “conserving your future”, ThermoGen™ systems run on natural gas and capture all the waste heat from their engines (turning it into useful hot water). This makes our systems 85% energy efficient. In addition, the reduction in carbon dioxide emissions is significant.

Service and support from our specialist CHP team

Energen Solutions provides immediate access to an unparalleled network of service and support for all ThermoGen™ products, including a team of CHP specialists who provide:

  • Free site surveys to assess your particular requirements (including comprehensive electrical and thermal load analysis),
  • Consultancy on how to optimise your on-site generation system,
  • Complete installation, testing and commissioning,
  • Advice on how to successfully interface your system with the utility, and
  • Specialized technical support (24/7).

Cogeneration and your utility provider

Using co-generation in conjunction with power from your utility provider, offers significant advantages.

Energen Solution’s systems can accommodate both synchronous or parallel generator operation. This means that where synchronous (or parallel) operation is desired, the generator will meet all site electrical demands up to its rated output.

Your utility provider may purchase surplus electricity from the generator, or provide any required the supplementary power.

Where the generator operates in isolation, it supplies selected site loads, and the utility provides stand-by power in the event of a planned or unplanned outage.

It may be advantageous to change supply tariff arrangements with your utility in order to derive the maximum benefit from the arrangement.

Also, using co-generation during peak periods of the day/week, when electricity purchases are most expensive, can result in significant savings.

Co-generation and energy savings

Long-term energy savings from cogeneration technologies can be high, depending upon the costs of alternative energy sources. Project development costs may typically be repaid within the first two to three years of start-up.

Cogeneration and the Government

Co-generation is an energy-and-demand side-management technique, endorsed by State and Federal Governments and Energy Planning Agencies, for its economics and environmental benefits to industry.
